Care Center 24 is a 10 bed area of the 30-bed ER designated for non-urgent patients. A sprained ankle, minor cuts or fevers all require immediate care. In most emergency room settings, patients with these ailments are treated alongside those suffering from heart attacks, strokes and life-threatening injuries/illnesses.
The CC24 provides a designated area with staff specially trained to meet the needs of the “non-urgent” patient without the wait. Open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week, the 10-bed CC24 unit offers quick treatment from a Physician Assistant (in collaboration with the ED Physician) and a Registered Nurse, License Practical Nurse and Nursing Assistant/Nursing Unit Clerk.
Housed in the ED, the CC24 offers the patients with minor injuries and illnesses an alternative to the long waits in most emergency rooms. Patients are “triaged” by a Registered Nurse to determine placement in the ED proper or in the CC24. Some medical complaints require major ED intervention and are typically not candidates for CC24 (see “Triage Criteria for the Placement of Patients—ER or CC24” policy & procedure). However, there are occasions when the ED reaches its capacity of emergent/urgent patients.
It is during these times that the ED physician and CC24 physician will collaborate—which could result in the placement and care of emergent/urgent patients in CC24.
