Shift Work
Two particular sleep-related problems are associated with shirt work - difficulty sleeping during the day, and difficulty staying alert at night. Those who work during the night must try to sleep when their bodies want to be awake, and to be awake when their bodies want to sleep.
While shift workers can benefit from all the sleep tips listed on this site, there are a few others that can help as well.
Maintain a regular sleep schedule seven days a week, even on days off work. Changing to a typical day schedule will simply make it harder to sleep during the day after returning to work. If you rotate shifts, try to be well rested at all times - naps may be helpful.
When possible, take breaks during work hours to enhance alertness - breaks have been shown to increase productivity and worker satisfaction. Shift workers should eat meals that are high in protein and carbohydrates, and avoid fried or hard to digest foods. Don't go to bed hungry, or immediately after eating a large meal.
If you find napping helpful, try to nap at the same time every day.
Use sleeping pills conservatively - if at all - and only with the consent of your doctor.
